Banning gay marriages makes your state uneducated, fat, and poor.

Asinine remarks are made on a regular basis at the National Organization for Marriage’s (NOM) blog.  But this one is especially galling to my sensibilities as a former LSAT tutor and current law school student:

Governor Pence was in town to introduce a new state based initiative office at the Evansville Rotary.  He says that many of the 32 states that define traditional marriage in their charters have some of the fastest growing economies, including Indiana, drawing a correlation between a ban on same-sex marriage and economic development.

According to the blurb, Pence only claims “correlation,” but we all get the implied message: “ban same-sex marriage and your economy will boom!”

Seriously?  Let’s apply Pence’s logic to some other statistics.

Here’s the 10 fattest states in the United States.  Nine of the 10 have bans against gay marriage.  West Virginia doesn’t recognize gay marriage, but nor does it have a constitutional ban.

      1. Mississippi
      2. Alabama
      3. West Virginia
      4. Tennessee
      5. Louisiana
      6. Kentucky
      7. Oklahoma
      8. South Carolina
      9. Arkansas
      10. Michigan

Here’s a list of the 10 states with the lowest percentage of college degree holders.   Nine of the 10 have constitutional gay marriage bans.

  1. West Virginia
  2. Arkansas
  3. Louisiana
  4. Kentucky
  5. Mississippi
  6. Nevada
  7. Oklahoma
  8. Tennessee
  9. Alabama
  10. Texas

Want the 10 states with the lowest median household incomes?  I do.  Eight of 10 in the gay-marriage ban camp.

  1. Mississippi
  2. West Virginia
  3. Arkansas
  4. Kentucky
  5. Alabama
  6. Tennessee
  7. Louisiana
  8. New Mexico
  9. South Carolina
  10. Oklahoma

So either Pence and NOM admit that their attempt to negatively associate gay marriage with economic growth or they both amend their findings with the finding that banning gay marriage will make your state uneducated, fat, and poor.
