We try to keep things pretty “rah rah Republican Party” on this site when possible. But this week has brought us a couple of real doozies from the Republican Party with respect to gay equality/non-persecution. (see Matt’s post early this week on Rep. Randy Forbes)
Check out these gems from former state representative Dave Agema (MI):
Folks, they (gay people) want free medical because they’re dying (when they’re) between 30 and 44 years old, . . . As a matter of fact when Jesus caught a woman in the act of adultery when they brought her to him he said, ‘I don’t condemn you but go and sin no more.’ . . . We ought to be saying to these people, ‘Hey, we don’t agree with your lifestyle and we’ll help you get out of it, but we want you to know the facts of what’s going to happen to you if you stay in this lifestyle. (from The Washington Post)
Apparently this builds on Agema’s comments last week that gays want free health care to pay for AIDS treatment.
There’s evidence that AIDS is still especially prevalent in America among gay men. But I’m struggling to find the data/evidence that suggests that gays are lobbying for free healthcare to address AIDS, that gays supported Obamacare more than the gay population’s general Democratic alignment would suggest, or that gays are “dying when they’re between 30 and 44 years old.” (Walter Olson and PolitiFact debunked this myth long ago.)
All in all, a pretty strong accusation to make without any solid evidence.
I do, however, take solace in pointing out that Agema is a former Republican representative. #Progress?
